Yesterday, I made a quick trip to my business post box.
I get all my work- and business-related post sent there.
After yesterday’s visit, I remembered why I do this.
Amongst all the random stuff, letters from scammers, takeaway and restaurant flyers, and a kind letter of thanks from a student were…
A set of magic tricks someone sent.
Two packs of cards, a fake thumb, and some sort of magic “cloth” (I have no idea what that is).
I vaguely remember someone emailing about magic a while back.
Now you can see why my public mailing address is not my home address! Haha
…But amongst all this, there was something very exciting…
The proof copy of my brand-new book!
There it was in all its glory.
I tore open the FedEx package and excitedly started going through it.
The book is printed and spiral-bound.
This is something a lot of people have requested over the years.
Spiral-bound books, after all, sit nicely on the music stand.
They do not fold up on themselves when you are in the middle of playing something…
…And they look cool!
“So, what is the book and when will it be out?” you might wonder.
I’m going to talk more about the book and exactly what it is very soon…
…But let’s just say I’m super, super excited about this.
One of my long-term students, Gordon, did a proofread for me a few weeks ago, and in his direct way he said:
“I have no further specifics; due to the incredibly high standard you have set. You are a great UK guitar ambassador.”
Glad to hear it.
The few folks who have seen it so far have said similar things.
Anyway, the book is fun and simple, it features a variety of exciting tips and is all about getting you to an intermediate level without any fluff.
Today, I’m going to make a nice cup of coffee and spend a few hours checking it over one more time before I give the go-ahead to the publisher to print the first run of copies.
There won’t be any PDF versions of this book.
There will be a limited number of copies…
…And it won’t be available to the general public (it’s definitely not going on Amazon).
That’s unusual, I know, but very soon, I’ll be revealing more about it all.
For now, I’ll finish by saying that writing a book is a lesson in patience.
Whenever I’ve started a book, I’ve wanted it finished yesterday.
Much like when we’re learning something new on the guitar…
Patience is key.
I literally have to force myself to slow down when writing, plan, be organised, and not just bang out 5000 words that I’ll probably never use.
Guess what?
That is just how we should practise the guitar.
Focus.
Take a moment to think about what you’re going to practise each day.
Be precise.
That’s a good lesson learnt from writing a book and a good lesson for practising.
